Since 1885, the Town of Carlisle,
Massachusetts has endeavored to recognize and honor
our citizens who gave of themselves to fight for the
freedoms that we all enjoy.
Their willingness to make sacrifices deserve to be
noted for future generations.
Each Memorial Day, we salute them, we honor them, we
thank them.
And now, here, you too can read the Roll Calls of our
past and present wars
and view the Memorials that our Town has erected in
their honor.

VETERANS' HONOR ROLL
Carlisle Mosquito, June
4, 2004, photo by E. Huber
Previously located at the edge of the Town Common at the
corner of Westford and Concord Streets were two wooden
structures entitled "Honor Roll - In Hope of Peace Serving
God & Country". The 198 names listed were those who
were called to duty for WWI, WWII, Korea & Vietnam.
Because the Memorial was constructed of wood, the years
took their toll. It was replaced by the new Veterans'
Honor Roll Memorial.
In the fall of 2007, the Carlisle Honor Roll Committee
was appointed by the Board of Selectmen to oversee the
design and construction of a new memorial that would
provide due recognition to those Carlisle residents (both
living and deceased) who served in the U.S. military
during the 20th century and beyond, and in some cases paid
the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives.
On June 28, 2009, the town of Carlisle proudly unveiled
its new Veterans' Honor Roll Memorial, listing the names
of the 286 servicemen and servicewomen from Carlisle who
served from World War I to the present-day. The additional
names were the result of an outreach effort to find other
Veterans who were not included on the previous Honor Roll.
Situated on the picturesque Town Common, the new memorial
was built from New England quarried granite with bronze
plaques 'floating' above the memorial wall, its appearance
is elegant, respectful and in keeping with the historic
nature of the Town Center. The design process, led by a
dedicated volunteer committee, was well-vetted by the
entire community with funding provided through the
Community Preservation Act and additional donations.

Moving Dedication Ceremony
|
ROLL CALL. Ned Berube, Vietnam
era veteran, reads the WWI honor roll during the
dedication ceremony on June 28. Also standing are
Honor Roll Committee members (left to right): Doug
Stevenson (chair), Larry Bearfield, Alan Cameron,
Alan Carpenito and U.S. Army Reserves Maj. Greg
Fairbank. (Photo by Ellen Huber) |
On June 28, 2009, under a spectacular, blue summer sky,
the official dedication of the new memorial was attended
by hundreds of Veteran's, their families and guests.
Featured keynote address was by honored guest Lt. Gen. Ted
Bowlds, Commander, Electronic Systems Command, Hanscom Air
Force Base. A Naval Honor Color Guard from the U.S.S.
Constitution presented the colors while Air Force Master
Sergeant Jennifer Dashnaw from the USAF Band of Liberty,
Hanscom AFB sang the National Anthem. The pledge of
Allegiance was led by Boy Scouts Jacob Golson & Jason
Eisenbies and the Carlisle Minuteman Battalion fired a
21-gun salute volley. Taps were played by Katherine
Sorrows & Dan Picard, Carlisle Middle School and
Carlisle resident Noragh Devlin sang America the
Beautiful. A Carlisle Fire Department Honor Guard was
present proudly flying an enormous American flag from the
fire department's ladder truck. Also present were members
of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Town and
state elected officials. See the July 3rd, 2009 issue of the Carlisle
Mosquito for a full report on the day's activities.

coins have also been used as part of the
