Household Recycling Committee - 2010                                                                   Page 2.

Other Activities

The recycling committee participated in the Olde Home Day parade.  We were awarded second prize for the “Chinese Dragon Trash Monster” float.  Thanks to Launa Zimmaro for overseeing the project and the rest of the volunteers, both young and old, for all of their hard work.

The annual Pass-It-Forward day was held on June 26, 2010.   The participating organizations collected an abundance of useable items including clothes, small furniture items, and toys.

The “Green Disk” collection of electronic media (tapes, disks, CD) for recycling continued at the swap shed.

A Municipal Outreach Grant of $750 was successfully obtained from the State.  The funds will be utilized by the highway department and CHRC for improved signage at the transfer station and for recycling publicity.

A Municipal Assistance Grant was also successfully obtained from the State (Dept. of Environmental Protection).  The grant is for 30 hours of in-kind technical assistance from the Regional Municipal Assistance Coordinator (Carolyn Dann).   This will be utilized to evaluate changes/options to our trash and recycling processes in town in order to increase the amounts of materials recycled.

The committee endorsed the Carlisle school composting/organic garden project.  The design and building of the school compost bins was coordinated by resident Randy Brown.  Planning, fundraising, and support were provided by an ad-hoc committee led by CHRC member Launa Zimmaro.

A Styrofoam collection day was planned for mid-January 2011 utilizing the services of the ReFoamIt Company from Framingham, MA.  This pilot project will be used to gauge the viability of future plans to permanently recycle Styrofoam.

The CHRC endorsed and supported the promotion of Active Aeration Manure Composting in Carlisle.  A discussion of the technique and an implementation plan among horse owners was initiated by Randy Brown.
